Endpoint Protection
Endpoint protection helps schools reduce risk beyond the network edge by protecting devices, servers and users from malware, ransomware and other cyber threats. Wave9 provides endpoint protection for schools and trusts using established tools such as Sophos, with optional additional monitoring and response where closer oversight is needed.
Protection doesn’t stop at the network edge
A firewall plays an important role in protecting the network, but it does not remove the need to protect the devices and systems behind it.
Laptops, desktops, servers and school-managed devices still need their own protection against malware, ransomware, suspicious activity and wider cyber threats. That is especially important where users move between school and home, where devices are used across different sites, or where a problem on one device could affect wider school systems.
For schools and trusts, this is about reducing avoidable cyber risk and making sure key systems remain protected in day-to-day use.
How Wave9 approaches endpoint protection
Wave9 supports schools with endpoint protection that is practical to deploy, straightforward to manage and aligned to how school environments actually operate.
Using Sophos endpoint protection technology, including tools such as Intercept X, schools can protect Windows and macOS devices, servers and other managed systems against a range of common threats. This includes protection against malware, ransomware, suspicious activity and exploit-based attacks, while helping schools maintain visibility and control across their estate.
Where schools already use Wave9 for firewalling, this can also support a more joined-up security approach across both the network edge and the devices behind it.
This can include
- Protection for laptops, desktops, servers and other managed devices
- Malware, ransomware and exploit protection
- Visibility over device health and suspicious activity
- Support across single-site or multi-site environments

Reducing risk without adding unnecessary complexity
Endpoint protection needs to be strong enough to reduce risk, but manageable enough to work in real life.
For schools and trusts, that means using tools that can provide meaningful protection without creating unnecessary noise, complexity or dependency on one person to interpret everything. The aim is not to add another difficult layer to manage, but to make device-level protection clearer, more consistent and easier to review over time.
If your environment has grown or changed over time, it can be useful to review whether endpoint protection still feels clear, proportionate and fit for purpose.
Optional advanced monitoring and response
For many schools, endpoint protection provides the right baseline. Where a higher level of oversight or response is needed, this can be extended through Sophos Managed Detect and Response (MDR).
This can provide an additional layer of monitoring and specialist response where environments are larger, more distributed or more dependent on uninterrupted access to key systems.
It is not a default requirement for every school, but it can be a useful next layer where internal capacity is limited or where cyber risk needs closer oversight.
